I visited Samoa on march 2001, for 3 weeks, after a long trekking trip down in NZ (half a year almost). I loved Samoa – one of the best places I’ve ever been too.

Here’s my short Samoan travelogue from that time. In Apia I stayed in Seipepa (you can even catch Mats and Sia in one of the breakfast photos) – what a wonderful guest house.

My favorite place was Savaii however, staying in Tanu beach most of the time.

Hopefully one day I’ll bring my wife and new daughter for a visit too…

I have also put a lot of effort into the new Google Mapmaker programme, spending a lot of hours so that Google Earth will portray Samoa’s roads, and beautiful countryside accurately.
Both the above projects are ‘works in progress’ so any feedback will be gratefully accepted.

All of my Samoan friends here in Sydney warned me of the heat but i dont think i was expecting it mainly because my friends always joke around with me – but WOW – we landed at around 3.30am and i almost passed out when the plane doors opened…by the time we got inside to customs i was soaked…but on a huge high as I was there finally…In Samoa. My dream.
Surrounded by Samoan people on their land – wanting to see and learn everything.

Over the time we spent there we met so many amazing, caring and beautiful people ( just as i thought) we toured, we attended cultural nights which i absolutely loved and wandered around the markets, shops and streets.

Road rules and driving is very relaxed over there – so mostly i was too scared to cross the road ( all in humour) but my friend who was with me would tell me to close my eyes, she’d grab my hand and run me across the road…it was a sight for the locals im sure

I met people in the street who knew me from home (Aus) – amazing….it is a small world!One of those i didnt know but he remembered me from my old workplace in Sydney.
Our taxi driver was the best, he took us everywhere for a small fee…out to his village where i could buy some lava lava’s to bring home. He came shopping with us and shared many laughs.

This type of thing is always something to remember whilst in Samoa – Its not like most countries who have big amounts of souvenirs (and a middle man) this is an Island of people who like to proudly show their talents my handmaking their items to sell and the best part is knowing that you are helping a community or country of people when you are buying.

Always be mindful of what you take photos of – some places around the world are obviously sacred or preferred not to be photographed – Its respect to ask especially if your in doubt!

Dress accordingly – speak accordingly.
If you are a person that can show no respect to others and their cultures then please do not go to Samoa – only visit if you know you will give full respect.

I love their country!Whilst they are not the richest financially – they are the richest in love, smiles and pride and thats what makes life. They made me so proud & happy & grateful to be allowed to visit their Island home.
