Again David conquer Goliath!

The Prime Minister of Samoa, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi compares the achievements of the Manu Samoa team with story of David and Goliath.

It is truly surprising how a small country like Samoa could become Champions of the IRB Sevens World Series for 2010/2011.

Special Holiday.

Monday the 7th of June was a special holiday dedicated to the Manu Samoa Team.

Many 1000s of people came to celebrate the heroes at the Molinuu peninsula in Apia. This is the special time the Prime Minister has to stand up to his promise of cash prices for the team and also a “ motion” to record the names of the players and their villages, in the annuals of the Legislative Assembly for all future generations.

Thankful Church Ministers.

Many of the Samoan church ministers have expressed their thanks to the Manu Samoa team for having faith in God. The team’s prayer for Victory has been heard. The boys have some busy days ahead picking up all the prices and gifts from both private people and companies plus attending meetings and parties.

I am sure they don’t mind…

Samoa – Rugby World Champions May 31

manu samoaNobody could sleep in Samoa last night.

Last night was the final in the IRB Sevens World Series which was won by Manu Samoa the national Samoan Rugby team.

Three games were played during the day in Edinburgh in Scotland. Samoa is on the other side of the world and the whole nation were sitting in front of the TV the whole night long waiting for the final game against Australia. Finally at 6 am the final game started and the Manu Samoa team trashed Australia with 41 – 14.

There were absolutely no way to sleep as the Samoan people could not calm down their feelings and joy when Manu Samoa got closer to win the Sevens final.

The blast came about 6.30 am when it finally was over. The island was rocking…

Small nation with a great team.

It is unbelievable, how a tiny little island nation in the South Pacific with only 180 thousand people could win a world series like the Sevens. Maybe it has something to do with the Samoan people’s natural playfulness and joy they express in almost any game and sport.

The prime minister of Samoa has already promised the boys a financial reward for their achievement plus an extra national holiday for all Samoan people to celebrate the event.

Independent Celebration in Samoa Jun 01

long-boatsOne of the highlights of the Independent Celebration (June 02) each year is the Fautasi Race (long boat). The harbor is always crowded with people waiting to see the boats with 52 crew members crossing the finish line in front of “Aggie Grays Hotel”.

Some ninety six men of Lepea village are wasting no time in getting themselves prepared for the upcoming Independence Day fautasi race next Monday.

Lepea is one of the villages who have submitted two longboats for the upcoming race, namely Fetu Afiafi and La o Samoa II and are not taking this competition lightly. Captain of Fetu Afiafi, Siu Aoelua says 90 percent of his team are new rowers with last year’s rowers allocated to their newly built boat La O Samoa II.

The rowers of both boats have been in camp for two weeks and have had a busy training schedule with a 3am road run followed by  rowing practices before breakfast. They have been doing weights mainly concentrating on upper body strength.

Let’s hope that they are all doing well.
